3 Step Semi Free Sparring
This form of sparring is designed as a step forward from basic three step sparring. It involves three consecutive attacks (hand or feet) and three blocks or evasions, plus a counter attack. Three step semi-free sparring should not be hurried, the secret is reaction force and quick, intelligent movements. This is where the true art of sparring is learnt.
Starting Position
Attacking students start in L stance guarding block. To begin each attack, the student may begin with either leg back
Defending students start in parallel stance.
Students should Kihap to notify each other that both are ready to begin. The defending student also Kihaps on the counter attack
Basic
3 Step Sparring (Basic) introduces the student to a more realistic form of set sparring.
All attacks are pre-arranged and performed in a safe and controlled manner to allow the student to learn the correct focus, distance and timing associated with this form of set sparring
Attacker
Attacker begins in forearm guarding block in a right L Stance.
The attacker will perform three kicks in the following order;
Front Kick,Side kick, Turning Kick.
All kicks should be aimed to the middle section
Defender
The defender will defend each kick with a waist block.
The counter attack is a reverse punch to the attackers solar plexis.
Intermediate
3 Step Sparring (Intermediate) builds on skills needed for basic level. No fixed routines are taught for this level if sparring.
Attacker
Attacker begins in forearm guarding block in a right L Stance.
The attacker will perform any three kicks of their choice from Front, Side, Turning and Reverse Side Kick
All kicks should be aimed to the middle section
Defender
The defender will defend each kick with a waist block.
The counter attack can be any hand technique, appropriate to grade.
Advanced
3 Step Sparring (Advanced) builds on skills needed for intermediate level. No fixed routines are taught for this level if sparring.
Attacker
Attacker begins in forearm guarding block in a right L Stance.
The attacker will perform three hand or foot techniques, or a combination of both of their choice.
Defender
The defender will defend each technique with appropriate blocking or avoidance manoeuvre.
The counter attack can be any hand technique, appropriate to the attack. Jumping and spinning techniques can be used.
Notes:
The choice of technique is left to student, but the technique and skill level should be commensurate with grade.
No jumping or flying techniques are allowed on the attack phase.
Set Sparring
THREE STEP SPARRING (SAMBO MATSOKI)
Three step sparring is designed for the beginner to learn the basic techniques. It teaches the student many things i.e. proper distance, correct facing, forearm conditioning, correct blocks, correct stance & counter attacks and timing. All attackers start in left walking stance, obverse low section outer forearm block. All defenders start in parallel ready stance.
TWO STEP SPARRING (IBO MATSOKI)
Two step sparring is designed for the intermediate student to learn more advanced techniques, but with more varied attacks, thus also allowing the attacking student to develop various combinations. All attackers start in right L stance, forearm guarding block. All defenders start in parallel ready stance
THREE STEP SEMI-FREE SPARRING
